Interview with Marie Elena John author of Unburnable
Jul 8th, 2007 by Angelique Shofar

Marie Elena John is a booming new author on the literary scene. Born and raised in Antigua, her life reveals the diversity of her heritage as an African Caribbean woman. A former Africa development specialist who divides her time between Washington, DC and her homeland Antigua, she has traveled the world and crossed cultural boundaries with her provocative new debut novel, Unburnable.
This compelling first novel traces the fortunes of three generations of women from the small Caribbean Island of Dominica. With characters as descendants of African slaves, this richly told narrative alternates between time periods, building suspense and compassion for all the characters. The diversity of the African continent is often overlooked in modern African American literature, and this page-turner fills some of the gaps.

Since our interview in Oct 2006, Marie Elena John has been traveling the world and taking her book across cultural boundaries. Unburnable has been instrumental in narrowing the gaps that alienate and separate the African family whose branches stretch far beyond the waters and lands of the Diasporic world.
In this interview, Marie Elena takes us to the inspiring moments and memories that initiated her writing talent and career and shares the commonalities that people of African descendant share…..regardless of where they live.
